Fireworks exploded in a kaleidoscopic shower of light over Sydney’s shimmering harbor Wednesday, as the world’s first major city to ring in 2009 celebrated the end of a decidedly rocky year with cheers, beers and a sense of relief.

Spectator Randolph King, 63, of York, England, whose retirement fund was gutted in the global financial crisis, summed up the feeling of many across the world as 2008 came to a close: “I’m looking forward to 2009,” he said. “Because it can’t get much worse.”

In Sydney, the midnight pyrotechnic extravaganza, which organizers hoped would give revelers a brief respite from the global gloom, drew a cheering crowd of more than a million people. Fireworks zigged and zagged against the backdrop of Sydney’s famed Harbor Bridge and simulated rain, thunder and lightning built toward a booming “creation storm,” in keeping with the evening’s theme of new beginnings.

“It is about reflecting and looking at what’s happened in the past and moving forward,” the celebration’s creative director, Rhoda Roberts, said of the night’s “creation” theme, chosen in part to reflect the struggles of 2008. “It’s a time for the community to gather, to reflect, and also to move on and to simply have a little bit of joy and celebration in their lives.”

But in Hong Kong, where thousands were expected at popular Victoria Harbor for a midnight fireworks display, those who had investments linked to collapsed U.S. bank Lehman Brothers said there was little joy to be found.

What she’s doing now is creating a drama because there are pictures out there of her.”
Berry, who is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $15,000, disagrees.
“If I wanted to take my clothes off for a living, that’s what I would do,” she said. “There’s not a photographer that has ever taken those sorts of shots of me. It’s more of a privacy thing. It’s not for everyone else to see…. I am scared of what he will do to my career.”

Melissa Berry is one very unhappy bunny. Well, actually, she’s not a Bunny as she’s not been in Playb0y (yet) and she actually works in the Lingerie Football League (eh? WTF is that?).

A Mexican beauty queen and international pageant winner has been detained by police along with alleged drug traffickers who had assault rifles and cash.

Laura Zuniga, the 23-year-old Miss Sinaloa from the marijuana-producing Mexican state, was held with seven men at a military checkpoint in Guadalajara, police said Tuesday.

“She is the beauty queen of Sinaloa and was aboard an SUV with the weapons and several of the men,” said a police spokesman from western Jalisco state, home to Guadalajara.

The spokesman said police and soldiers at the checkpoint on the outskirts of Mexico’s second-largest city were tipped off that traffickers were moving through the area Monday night.

“No one expected this young woman to be aboard, along with more than a dozen cell phones, lots of cash, pistols, bullets and two rifles,” the spokesman said.

Laura Zuniga won the Miss Sinaloa title in July and was to compete in the Miss International 2009 pageant next year in Asia. She was named “Queen of Hispanic America 2008″ in a contest in Bolivia.

Beauty queen arrested in gun-filled truck

Mexican model taken into custody along with suspected gang members

A reigning Mexican beauty queen from the drug-plagued state of Sinaloa was arrested with suspected gang members in a truck filled with guns and ammunition, police said Tuesday.

Miss Sinaloa 2008 Laura Zuniga stared at the ground, with her flowing dark hair concealing her face, as she stood squeezed between seven alleged gunmen lined up before journalists. Soldiers wearing ski masks guarded the 23-year-old model and the suspects.

Laura Zuniga was arrested shortly before midnight Monday at a military checkpoint in Zapopan, just outside the colonial city of Guadalajara, said Jalisco state police director, Francisco Alejandro Solorio.

Laura Zuniga was riding in one of two trucks, where soldiers found a large stash of weapons, including two AR-15 assault rifles, 38 specials, 9mm handguns, nine magazines, 633 cartridges and $53,300 in U.S. currency, Solorio said.

Zuniga told police that she was planning on traveling to Bolivia and Colombia with the men to go shopping, Solorio said.

The author behind a new biography of Michael Jackson has sparked rumours the star is seriously ill – suggesting the singer may be suffering from a deadly lung condition.

Ian Halperin, a former writer for America’s Rolling Stone magazine, is producing a new book about Michael Jackson’s life and has detailed the Thriller hitmaker’s medical problems – claiming he is suffering from a condition known as Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a potentially fatal genetic illness.

Halperin states that Jackson is losing the vision in his left eye and has subsequently developed emphysema, a lung condition linked to heavy smokers, which can be caused by the initial illness.

Halperin writes, “He has had Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency for years, but it’s gotten worse. He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it. He also has emphysema and chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, which his doctors have had a lot of trouble stopping. He can barely speak, the vision in his left eye has 95 per cent.

“For years Michael has been working with doctors to make sure it doesn’t progress. He has been on medications that have stabilised him.”

Jackson’s older brother, Jermaine, recently hinted at the star’s poor health, telling Fox News, “He’s not doing so well right now. This isn’t a good time.”

Michael Jackson Suffering From Potentially Fatal Health Issues

Michael Jackson is reportedly in desperate need of an emergency transplant operation to save his life from a rare lung condition, according to the author of a new biography of the singer.

Best-selling author Ian Halperin has completed a book about Jackson’s life, which claims that the pop icon, 50, suffers from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a potentially fatal genetic illness, as well as emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding.

“He’s had it for years, but it’s gotten worse,” Halperin told In Touch magazine. “He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it … [But] it’s the [gastrointestinal] bleeding that is the most problematic part. It could kill him.”

Halperin also claims that the “Thriller” and “Bad” singer can barely speak and is 95-percent blind in his left eye.

Earlier this year, Jackson was photographed in a wheelchair. A few weeks ago, he was spotted receiving help walking, while wearing a Zorro style mask.
